alien abduction short film: analysis

cinematography:
I really like the cinematography in this short film. they open with a nice establishing shot of the scenery and where the short film will be based. the location choice is also very good because corn fields have been used in other alien movies such as signs. then it changes to a long shot of the subject walking closer to the camera. the film also used lots of un-steady camera work to give it a sense of realism and make you feel like you are there. then it uses an aerial/crane shot to get an overview of the subject running into the field. then a close up of the dogs collar, this indicates that the dogs has gone missing or taken.

sound: the sound at the beginning is a very lonely sound, with the noise of crickets and birds, this suggests that there is not anyone around and gives a sense of enigma and mystery to what is going to happen. then a very high pitch piano tune comes in with a mixture of violin, this gives a very creepy and dark feel to the scene. then the sound goes to diegetic sound of the wind building up and sounds of a storm and the dialogue. the sounds of the building storm represents the building of tension in the current moment of the film.

titles: when the title is shown in the opening sequence it shows the words 'alien abduction', but the way it is shown is very clever, the camera is in a Point of view (POV) shot looking up through the field of corn towards the sky and the title is coming down from the sky. the words alien abduction could represent a UFO coming down from the sky to come and abduct someone.

the road

I love the style of this film, I think that the dull, sepia tone colours of this film really shows the mood of this film, I am torn between whether to use either this sort of dull colour tone or very vibrant and contrasting colours in my final project. but I do very much so like the idea of making the film very dull but having a powerful and touching storyline alongside it.

feedback MGS: 1 (15/9/14)

  • writing should be focused on film form, example: camera shots, locations, colours, and how they link to he sound choice.
  • freeze frame key shots of short films and discuss briefly.
  • consider what genre.

3: Hans Zimmer - Time

now for this I am focused on the music, I believe music is one of the most important things in a film/ T.V series, personally I believe it can sometimes tell the story better than if dialogue was used. music can set the tone for a scene and or throughout the whole thing. this one specific piece (Time), is a very powerful and moving piece of music, I believe this because the song itself has a beginning, middle and an end, at the beginning it starts in a way that makes me think very deeply, about things that may not have been very good, but as the song goes on the music builds and the mood changes, and in a sense you see a completely different light to things, it becomes very powerful, and used in a film it could represent the building of a character, show them starting off very low, and then slowly building into someone who can overcome all challenges. ending with a very peaceful tone, in a film it can show a character who has overcome his obstacles and who is now someone completely different from who he was at the start.

2: LOVEFIELD

I like the way this film starts very sinister and dark, the music that is used at the beginning builds and builds more tension along with the sound of the phone beeping and then when the woman screams. at this point you are still left confused by what is happening. then a very nice shot of a knife being planted into the ground. then the pace rises and adds more tension. also I found that the bird makes a very good effect in this film as it makes it very eerie. but then when he goes back to the woman and holds up a baby, everything changes, the music becomes a lot more jolly and all dark aspects are gone.

1: the most beautiful thing.

this film really interests me because of the way that the story progresses, along with the both main characters progressing. i really like the camara work and cinematography, espeially when the main male goes to ask the girl to prom, but before he can another comes and kisses her, he then sharply turns around and the camara does not focus on the other two behind him, unfocused, the girl pushes the boy away in disgust. also the music is very fitting with each scene and changes with the mood of the male character.
